What is a POU water filter?
A Point-of-Use (POU) water filter system is a filter installed on one particular plumbing fixture, like a kitchen sink, as opposed to a POE (Point-of-Entry) which is installed where the water enters the home and treats all the water to the entire house. The 2 main types are R.O. and Carbon ; the benefits of these are they cost less than a whole house system, and provides better filtration than refrigerator and pitcher filters.
A carbon filter can be installed on the kitchen faucet to remove any bad taste and odor while still delivering two gallons a minute. At two gallons a minute this ensures a constant steady stream of water when you turn on the kitchen faucet every time, while not reducing the time it takes to fill a pot. While carbon filters remove some common contaminates in your homes water, an R.O. system is highly effective in removing them.
An R.O. filter is known as a Reverse Osmosis system. This system uses a fine filter to remove all contaminants in your homes water. Our service technician will test your homes water in ppm (parts-per-million) to specify all contaminates in the water. For example, if the test starts with 200ppm, we will install a filter that will end up producing around 2-8ppm, which is almost pure H2O! Just think of that, out of a million parts only two are not water! A Reverse Osmosis system will provide you with the purest tasting and safest water directly at your kitchen sink!
A POU filter will not protect your plumbing pipes, water heater, dishwasher or other appliances in your home. Some contaminants are not only harmful if you drink them but can be absorbed through the skin like chlorine and chloramine which are harmful in many ways. Since both of these systems do use filters they will need replacing depending on the quality of water that your house has.
“Research conducted on the health effects of chlorinated drinking water have demonstrated a variety of toxicity issues. Several studies have found that communities using chlorinated drinking water have an increased risk of bladder, kidney, and rectal cancers. (4, 5, 6) THMs from chemically treated water have been associated with a variety of poor birth outcomes, such as spontaneous abortion, birth defects, and low birth weight. (7) Chlorine and chloramine vapors are associated with greater risk of asthma, and may damage the mucosal lining of the respiratory tract. (8) Free radicals in chlorinated water have been linked to liver malfunction, weakening of the immune system and pre-arteriosclerotic changes in arteries.
