There are many things that can be in your homes water. Some may cause unpleasant ugly odors and stains others may be dangerous to you, your families and even your pets health.  Here are some common things found in drinking water systems and their solutions.

Chlorine, chloramine and other municipal treatment chemicals:

Carbon, whether in a self-cleaning unit or a replaceable cartridge unit works great for pulling out dangerous chemicals. Carbon comes in many variations for a multitude of specialized uses. EPA limit of 4ppm

Iron: Can cause red staining, a very unpleasant “rotten egg” odor often confused a sulfur smell. Can be attached to the water molecule or free floating, which makes a difference on treatment options. One way to treat iron is with a product named Potassium Permanganate which can have extreme adverse health side effects. Which is why we prefer to go with a safer treatment that is just as effective.

Hardness:

Caused by dissolved naturally occurring minerals in the ground. Called “Hard water” because it is hard to clean with. It makes cleaners and soaps less effective so ore product is used to achieve the same result. Can drastically shorten the life span of major appliances like hot water heaters, dishwashers, and HVAC humidifiers. We prefer to use cation softeners to remove hardness and extend the life of your appliances.

Nitrates:

Can be caused from improper use of chemical fertilizers or improper disposal of human or animal waste. Most harmful to the elderly and very young it inhibits the body’s ability to absorb oxygen. Can only be treated with a Reverse Osmosis system. One of the many things we can test for in the home. EPA limit of 10ppm

pH:

If correct is not an issue, however if low (acidic) can eat the piping right out of a home, causing major water damage, loss of time, and renovation cost. As it is stripping the material out of the pipe it is simultaneously carrying that right to your tap. So whatever material it is removing from your piping is going into your drinking water. Can easily be treated with a neutralizer. Neutral is 7.
